I read with interest last week (BFP, October 11) the concerns of a Lib Dem Councillor about Wycombe District Council awarding themselves an increase of nearly 30 per cent in their allowances at a time when people are “really suffering”. I don’t know whether he deserves an award for hypocrisy. Or perhaps it has escaped his notice that it is his party, which has given support to the Tories, causing that suffering?

The Lib Dems have supported the Tories in slashing the incomes and living standards of millions of the less well-off, while claiming that “we’re all in it together”. This phrase has been used noticeably less and less as people realise that it is just not the case.

I sincerely hope that the less well-off in this country finally come to realise what the coalition, including the Lib Dems, is doing.

I used to respect the Lib Dems, and have even occasionally voted for them, as I thought they had principles and a sense of decency, but it is now clear that power corrupts.
