TWINKLE-toed tap dancers at a Beaconsfield academy joined thousands of others on Sunday in a bid to break a world record.

Pupils at the Elite Academy of Dance, which has studios in Maidenhead and Beaconsfield, took part in a Tapathon for BBC Children in Need.

The 34-strong troupe attempted to break the Guinness World Record for the largest tap dancing event in the UK, with similar scenes happening throughout the country.

The dancers, aged from 13 to 63, were taught the routine to Robbie Williams' ‘Candy’ over the past few months, coming together on Sunday to begin the simultaneous tap dance.

Dance teacher Lin Sweeney said: "The fun they had! They just loved it and it was lovely to do something for a great cause and get together.

"We did a warm-up which was lots of laughs and fun then danced the routine twice through - it was really exciting."

Tapathon organiser The Performers Project hopes to have broken the world record, which currently stands at 7596 people.

But with over 10,000 tappers involved, each dance will need to be verified before an announcement can be made.

Profit from t-shirt sales was donated to Children in Need.
