ECO-WARRIORS at a primary school have been rewarded for transforming their classrooms into energy efficient havens as part of an international project.

Pupils at Marlow C of E Infant School were awarded with their third ‘Green Flag’ status after demonstrating their commitment to eco-friendly measures throughout the school.

After forming an eco-committee alongside parents and teachers, the young activists came up with a full plan of action to save energy and resources.

And a recent inspection from the international Eco Schools initiative was impressed with their efforts, handing the school its third Green Flag in six years.

Teacher Sam Wyton, who helped co-ordinate the project, said: “The eco-committee did a review and looked at recycling, litter and how much electricity we use.

“Our electricity monitors go around and so spot checks in classrooms looking at things like computers being left on and doors left open.

“The kids are better than the adults and they regularly tell their teachers off for leaving their white boards turned on!

“The assessor said he was impressed how it is all embedded into our curriculum and it really helps the kids’ awareness of eco-issues”

As well as the eco-spot checks, each class took care of its own recycling and the children formed a litter picking club.

The Eco Schools initiative, part of the Keep Britain Tidy campaign, sees schools attain bronze and silver awards before working towards the coveted Green Flag.

The school, known as Sandygate, has previously received the accolade in 2008 and 2011.
