A GOLF day in memory of one of Marlow’s best-loved characters has been cancelled just days before the event was due to take place.

The daughter and best friend of Danny Churchill had organised a day of golf and a fundraising auction in memory of the popular Rotarian and regatta organiser, who died last April aged 66.

But Sarah Grigg announced this week that the event scheduled for Friday at Flackwell Heath Golf Club, where her father used to be on the board, had to be called off as not enough club members were available.

She said: "Lots of Dad’s friends had signed up, from his band, industry, regatta, rotary and personal friends but not many from the club. Dad was a member of the club for 30 + years and was on the board but left about 10 years ago."

Mrs Grigg added that the organising team which included Mr Churchill’s former golfing buddy Derrick Clarke had received lots of support from people wanting to attend the lunch and donate prizes for the raffle.

But with not enough golfers, the day has had to be pulled.

Mr Churchill was well known to Marlovians through his work with the Marlow Town Regatta and Festival, Rotary Club and Marlow Youth Club.

After moving to Marlow over 40 years ago, he was a founding member of the Marlow Town Regatta committee and instrumental in the launch of the event in 2001 when the original Regatta was moved to Dorney Lake.

The charismatic former Dixon’s director was also a keen musician and could be regularly heard entertaining crowds at hotels and golf clubs alongside his band 'Hedonistics'.

Mrs Grigg said she is planning to hold another future events in her father’s honour, but has not yet confirmed the details.
