A SCOUT hut has been transformed into a First World War trench this month, with young children learning what life was like in the war.

As part of the 1st Bourne End Scout Group initiative, children could walk through history and were even given the opportunity to try on real war uniforms and hold the weapons soldiers used during the historic battles.

The trench, which was erected in a small hall in the scout hut, in Furlong Road, has also been opened to the public and the group plan to rebuild it every November until 2018, which marks the centenary anniversary of the end of the war.

Group Scout Leader Emma Lee said: “It (the public’s reaction) has been phenomenal and I think everyone has been impressed with how it looks. It has taken a lot of work and the building for the structure started in September.

“The children have all been really helpful and have enjoyed helping to put it all together and stepping back in time to go through the trenches.

“We came up with the idea as a way to teach the scouts more about the war and The Poppy Appeal as they are currently working towards their heritage badges.

“In one week we have had about 300 children come through here and if they have all enjoyed themselves and learned something, we have done a good job.”

The trench is set less than one year into the war, on May 16, 1915 and scout leaders have written a story around the trench giving visitors a realistic trip back in time to explore the trenches, while the Oxfordshire and Bucks light infantry are said to be fighting their way through the German front lines.

As well as having a narrated tour in darkness, with only candles leading the way, there are also many artefacts and donated items displayed.

There are still some open days left for people to visit Bourne End’s version of the trenches.

This weekend doors will be open on Saturday from 12pm to 5pm and on Sunday from 10am to 12pm.

The exhibit will also be on display on Saturday, November 29, from 12pm to 3pm and finishes on Sunday, November 30, from 10am until 12pm.

Visitors are asked to make a £1 donation with all money raised going to The Poppy Appeal.
