A new film created by a Chesham art group telling the story of British Asian women living in Bucks has been made available to view online.

The Chiltern Moving Art group's film Grey Side of the Sky has been met with great acclaim at film screenings and festivals over the last 12 months, and has now been made available to a wider audience to watch.

Grey Side of the Sky looks at British Asian women in three very different eras and tells their stories.

The first part looks at the initial wave of Asians that arrived in Britain in the 1960s with their husbands, often finding isolation from their families at home and struggling to integrate with their new neighbours.

Next comes a section portraying women that arrived into Bucks in the 1990s, who found it easier to integrate into their communities thanks to better education and careers, coupled with electronic communication with their homelands.

The final part looks at the young British Asian girls of today, who are often torn between two cultures which are still very different and contradictory.

Director Mahuya Kanjilal, from Chesham, said: "I wanted to make the film because this is a story that simply hadn’t been told. These women had been through so much in their lives, some of it very challenging and tragic, yet no one knew their stories.

"This was an issue I had to do something about."

Film editor Monish Sengupta, who is also from Chesham, added: "Grey Side of the Sky is a film that will play an important role for the Buckinghamshire in the future, to document the lives of women who are hard-working and brave, and have played an instrumental part of how our county has developed."

Grey Side of the Sky was produced in association with Bucks New University, Bucks Community Foundation, Chiltern District Council, Aylesbury Vale Community Chest and Wycombe District Council. The film can be watched on the Chiltern Moving Art website at www.chilternmovingart.co.uk.

Chiltern Moving Art is a Chesham-based group which aims to unite the community through the love of performing art.
