Boris Johnson has said HS2 needs to go through a greater number of tunnels to limit its impact on the environment, following a meeting with a south Bucks MP.

The Mayor of London said after meeting Chesham and Amersham MP Cheryl Gillan that a high speed rail line that "works better both inside and outside the capital" is needed.

Mrs Gillan said afterwards the Mayor is keen for more of the planned route to go through tunnels - sharing her view about doing more to protect the environment.

Speaking outside City Hall after the meeting, former Welsh Secretary Mrs Gillan said: "Having known the Mayor for many years, I was glad to find common ground with him on working to protect the environment and those people so directly affected by the HS2 project.

"Boris and I agreed to continue to work together and I look forward to promoting together the extra tunnelling that will provide much needed protection for all our constituents."

Mr Johnson, who is standing for election to Parliament in the Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency, said: "There is much that Cheryl and I agree on when it comes to mitigation around HS2. We need an HS2 that works better both inside and outside the capital.

"Londoners and residents in Buckinghamshire deserve a better deal on both compensation and tunnelling, within London and beyond the M25. I will continue to work closely with Cheryl to ensure that’s exactly what happens."

During the meeting at City Hall on Monday, January 26, Mrs Gillan also raised concerns at the lack of staff, parking and disabled access at Amersham, Chesham and Chalfont and Latimer stations.

She said: "I also hope that he will be able to look at the issues regarding our own stations, and will be following up on the matters which I have raised on behalf of constituents, who do not have a vote in London yet have their stations held directly in the control of the London Assembly."
