Children got into the spirit of the General Election by voting to choose new playground equipment as part of a scheme to learn about the UK's voting system.

Year two pupils at St George's Infant School in Amersham planned their own mini elections before going to the polls to decide what item of equipment they wanted for the school.

The votes were then counted by their electoral officials, with a bean bag target game being declared the winner of the White Lion Road school's election.

Headteacher Toby Long said: "This exciting opportunity to explore what democracy means not only gave the children an understanding of the forthcoming election, but supported the school's work in highlighting one of the government's new British values, democracy."

Vivian Newell, the school's vice chairman of governors, added: "The children all asked very sensible questions and their enthusiasm for the subject was amazing, which became infectious across the school. I hope all the children enjoy playing with the new equipment."
