Over 1000 women gathered in the spectacular setting of Waddesdon Manor gardens to celebrate the centenary of the Women’s Institute today.

The sun shone as more than 1,200 Bucks Federation of WI members and their families celebrated 100 years of the women’s movement with a dedicated garden party.

There were over 20 stalls from local charities and businesses, including St Tiggywinkles Animal Hospital, Hearing Dogs for Deaf People, Chiltern Cold Pressed, Mid Bucks Beekeepers Association, Auberge Du Chocolat, Mimi’s Marvellous Mixes, Shaw’s of Amersham and Little Shop of Cheese.

As well as competitions to determine the best dressed lady and the best picnic table, a raffle with luxury prizes like £250 cash, Prosecco, wine tasting and bed and breakfast and Waddesdon tea vouchers was drawn, with the Chairman of Bucks County Council, Bill Chapple, picking the winning tickets out.

A magician and graphologist entertained the visitors and there were two marquees, one which was completely dedicated to the Women’s Institutes.

The crowds were serenaded by The Ukulele Man, Vintage Brass and the Joyful Divas, the County Choir for the BFWI.

Since forming three years ago, the Joyful Divas have performed at the likes of Aylesbury Waterside Theatre and Hughenden Manor.

Fairford leys WI member Jacqueline King, who is also the County Treasurer at BFWI and organises the choir, said: “Today has been brilliant. The weather has been fantastic and it’s great to see everyone here with their picnics.

“This event has been a couple of years in the making and it’s wonderful to see it all come together. Waddesdon is beautiful and we have had some fantastic prizes donated from local businesses for the raffle.

“It’s been an amazing day.”
