Several cars have been towed from a zebra crossing in Beaconsfield over the last month in the latest of a series of long standing parking issues in the town.

Police intervened in London End in order to free up the pedestrian crossing, that they say is continuously used as a parking spot.

Residents and businesses say Beaconsfield Old Town, which has no regulated parking, becomes completely clogged with cars every day - with the problem showing no signs of abating.

Staff at an interior design shop opposite the crossing said police have only just started to take action, despite people parking across the zebra crossing regularly.

Interior designer, Casey McGrath said: “Police were coming round every hour, and if they saw cars parked there they would either give them a ticket or tow it.

“This happened over the course of three days. About eight cars were towed in total.”

Despite the action taken by police, people seem to continue parking on the crossing - which is illegal.

Town councillor Alan Schofield said: “It’s crazy that people would park there, but it’s becoming quite a common thing for people to do. It’s just pure laziness.”

There have been growing calls for a solution to the free long-term parking that residents say is preventing visitors and shoppers from coming to the area.

South Bucks District Council proposed a land swap last year, in which areas from the old town would be swapped with an area of open space on the edge of town to allow for 45 paid for parking spaces.

However, 59 percent of residents who answered the survey were against the proposals.

Much of the area is currently designated common land or owned by Hall Barn Estates (HBE), and so parking enforcement is not possible on the site.
