The police officer injured in an alleged assault in Castlefield has been named by police as PC Andrew Smith.

Award-winning PC Smith, who covers the Castlefield and Oakridge areas on his beat, suffered a head injury in an alleged assault in Spearing Road on Wednesday.

Emergency services were called to the scene at 12.15pm and the injured officer was taken to Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The incident has shocked Castlefield residents, many of whom nominated him as Community Officer of the Year for the Thames Valley - an accolade he won earlier this year.

Chief Constable Francis Habgood described the 'widely liked, trusted and respected' officer as an 'absolute credit' to the force at the Community Policing Awards in July.

Councillors have expressed their horror at the incident and wished PC Smith well.

Oakridge and Castlefield councillor Sebert Graham said: "We see them [police] patrolling in Castlefield regularly to keep the community secure.

"I think everyone needs to be more appreciative of the work they do, they work hard to keep us safe on the streets.

"Castlefield is a nice place to live and this is terrible. My thoughts are with the police officer in question and I hope he is going to be ok."

Cllr Julia Wassell said: "I hope the officer makes a speedy recovery" while Cllr Brian Pearce said he was 'horrified'.

- Aiden George, 20, of Spearing Road, was charged with grievous bodily harm on Wednesday in connection with the incident.

He appeared at High Wycombe magistrate’s court today and was remanded in custody to appear at Aylesbury Crown Court on September 24.

A 51-year-old woman from High Wycombe was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm.

She was arrested on Wednesday and has been released on police bail until September 29.
