A Spitfire enthusiast from High Wycombe got the opportunity to fly one of the iconic World War Two planes last week as the country commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Phil Mullett of Cressex, High Wycombe, flew the two-seater aircraft on Saturday in the same week of the main anniversary celebrations, which saw 40 planes fly on different routes around the south of England on Tuesday.

Mr Mullett – whose father worked with Lancaster bombers during his time in the RAF - said he had always been interested in Spitfires but had never been able to fly one due to aviation law.

However, back in September 2014 the Civil Aviation Authority changed the law and Mr Mullett jumped at the opportunity to fly one of the famous planes.

He had been due to take to the sky on 7 July but the flight – rather conveniently - was delayed due to bad weather.

Mr Mullett said: “It was brilliant - a priceless for anyone who loves flying and I just happened to be there on a very important day.

“It went extremely well and I even got to fly the plane myself.

“It was very noisy but it was fantastic. We did some steep turns and also a wing wobble.”
