A 20-year-old man has admitted to brutally assaulting an award-winning policeman in broad daylight last week, as the town’s MP called for a halt to violence on the streets.

Aiden George, of Spearing Road, pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm in connection with the attack on PC Andrew Smith in Castlefield on Wednesday, September 16.

PC Smith – named Thames Valley Police’s community PC of the year in July – was left lying on the ground unconscious with head injuries, in an assault which rocked the community.

Residents said they are worried for the security and future of the neighbourhood following a number of other serious crimes in the town in recent months.

But Wycombe MP Steve Baker insists people should have every confidence in the police to keep their neighbourhood safe, despite the latest incident after an alleged murder and two alleged stabbings in the town centre.

He told the BFP: “I continue to have great confidence in the police. We do not live in a society where the police should be on every street corner and looking over every shoulder.

“We do rely on people behaving decently and obeying the law.

He added: “I’ve sent my best wishes to him [PC Smith] – I understand he is recovering well.”

PC Smith was taken to hospital after the incident on Spearing Road and is currently recovering from his injuries.

Police have not yet commented on George’s guilty plea.

George entered his guilty plea at a preliminary hearing at Aylesbury Crown Court yesterday and is due to be sentenced on October 24.

Update: No further action has been taken against a 51-year-old woman from High Wycombe who was arrested on suspicion of GBH following the incident.
