A man has been taken to hospital with serious head injuries after he crashed his car in St Albans early this morning.

The incident occurred in Marshal's Drive at around 4am.

The man, who is in his 30s, drove his black Vauxhall Astra into a parked camper van and pushed it into the front garden of a house.

Police, fire and ambulance were called to the scene.

Firefighters used cutting gear to free the driver, who has been taken to St Mary's Hospital in London in a critical condition..

The road, which was closed at the junction with Homewood Road and Marshalswick Lane, has now been reopend.
