A Marlow super school could be on the cards after Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School approached The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead with a view to create a ‘satellite’ site over the border in Berkshire.

The school on West Street will be considered for a site expansion in Maidenhead by the council’s scrutiny committee tonight.

The Royal Borough initially shelved grammar school expansion plans in September until a decision was made to expand the Weald of Kent School in Tonbridge to a site in Sevenoaks, Kent, last week.

This decision to create an annex school sidestepped the ban on the opening of new grammar schools, which was put in place to reduce ‘selective’ education.

However Cllr Phillip Bicknell, from the Royal Borough, has said it is still ‘early days’, as the council must carefully consider how to spend up to £200,000 exploring the idea.

He said: “Borlase approached us with the interest of expanding. It is still very much early days and the initial papers will be considered at scrutiny committee tonight.

“However there is still a risk that if the school in Kent falls over, then we will be wasting the public’s money, which is why it has to be considered carefully.

The legalities concerning ownership and funding will be considered at tonight’s meeting, where a recommendation will be put forward to full cabinet on Thursday, October 27.

Borlase is yet to publicly comment on the expansion.
