A former Wycombe Wanderers and England youth international footballer is in custody after being charged with a robbery at a betting shop in High Wycombe.

Nathan Ashton, who is on the coaching team at Marlow FC, was charged for his alleged role in the robbery at a branch of Corals, in Cressex, last week.

An unspecified amount of cash was stolen during the raid at the Cressex Road bookmakers, police said.

Ashton, 28, was remanded in custody by magistrates and is due to appear before a crown court judge next month.

As a youngster the winger, who lives in Reading, represented England at every level from U16 to U19 and was called up to the U20 on several occasions but never made an appearance.

He started his career at Crystal Palace before moving to Fulham, who he made one appearance for in a 3-1 Premier League victory over Reading in front of 22,000 people in March 2007.

Ashton's most recent Football League club were Wycombe Wanderers, where he made 13 appearances in the 2008/09 season. After leaving to join AFC Wimbledon he drifted around a number of non-league clubs.

His occupation was given to police as unemployed, but he is currently on the coaching team of non-league Marlow FC.

Ashton was charged following the raid on the bookmaker on October 30.

He is due to appear at Aylesbury Crown Court on December 7.
