A pensioner accused of murdering an elderly pedestrian in a road rage attack appeared before a crown court judge this morning.

White-haired Odysseas Vafiadis - who stands accused of murdering Chalfont St Peter resident Paul Davidson following a confrontation on a zebra crossing - listened intently to the hearing when he appeared via a video link from Woodhill Prison, where he is currently being held.

The 70-year-old, dressed in a faded prison issue jumper, rested his chin on his clenched fists as he waited for the hearing to start.

He spoke only to say: "Yes, that is correct" when asked to confirm his full name.

No application for bail was made and Vafiadis - known to neighbours as John - was remanded back into custody by Judge John Reddihough during a hearing lasting for less than five minutes.

Vafiadis allegedly confronted 69-year-old Mr Davidson as he stepped out onto a pedestrian crossing in Market Place, in Chalfont St Peter, on Friday, November 6.

It is said he attacked the pedestrian before driving away in a white Skoda Yeti.

Mr Davidson was treated at hospital but died three days later as a result of the injuries he sustained.

After two days of questioning Vafiadis, of Birchdale, Gerrards Cross, was charged with murder and appeared before magistrates in High Wycombe on Friday.

The defendant then appeared before Reading Crown Court today for another short hearing.

Alan Blake, prosecuting, said the case would be adjourned until December 11, when Vafiadis was expected to enter a plea.

Judge Reddihough said the defendant must be brought to court for his next hearing, having appeared today over a video link from jail.

He said: "I'll direct that he'll be produced for that hearing and formally remanded again into custody."

Addressing the defendant, Judge Reddihough said: "You'll next be due to appear on December 11, when I hope some progress can be made on this case. Meanwhile, you must remain in custody. Thank you very much."

A provisional trial date has been set for April 4.
