A ‘dangerous’ mini-roundabout near a supermarket in Totteridge should be moved to protect pedestrians, a councillor has claimed.

Earlier this year, 371 people signed a petition to have a mini-roundabout in Hatters Lane repositioned after claims that the “flawed” design could lead to accidents and risk the safety of other people.

At a High Wycombe Town Committee meeting this week, councillors talked of implementing a new crossing on the road near a Tesco Express store at a cost of more than £100,000.

However, Totteridge councillor Julia Wassell said it would be about £40,000 cheaper to move the roundabout which would help in cutting the speed of passing traffic.

The East Wycombe Independent councillor said: “Frankly, I’m shocked at this scheme. I’m shocked at the cost, I’m shocked at the low number of footfall of people that it would benefit.

“But, light at the end of the rainbow, they also did a feasibility study on the amendment to the mini-roundabout where 371 people have signed a petition.

“Large numbers of people support that scheme, [including] the police neighbourhood action group who originally nominated that scheme, and it is coming in at £72,000.

“And it says in that feasibility study that that will slow down traffic at the very area where we are supposed to have the so-called pedestrian refuge scheme.”

She added: “We have had the air ambulance out in that area on a number of occasions in the past. It can be a dangerous road.”

According to residents who live on the road, the roundabout is too close to the junction of Hicks Farm Rise, and motorists often drive over the roundabout, rather than around it, in the direction of High Wycombe.

Planned changes could be funded by the community infrastructure levy which over the next three years is expected to bring in between £600,000 and £1 million to the town committee.

Committee chairman, cllr Tony Green said: “As a Totteridge resident I can personally say I don’t have an issue crossing the road there, but the roundabout is a problem.

“But, I should say I think it is something Transport for Bucks should be funding not this CIL.”

Cllr Lesley Clarke also agreed with Cllr Wassell, saying: “The number of times I have nearly collected someone on that roundabout because I go around the roundabout and they go straight across it is rather worrying.”
