Reckless drivers have been spotted moving road closure signs near a notorious flooding-spot, which has left motorists needing the help of the emergency services.

Bucks Fire and Rescue crews have been called out five times in the last five days to the south Bucks lane which has left many drivers stuck in deep water.

A deep ford on Hawkswood Lane, between Fulmer and Gerrards Cross, has left some motorists stranded, but in the last 24 hours others have been seen moving warning signs and driving through the dangerous water.

The signs were put up by Transport for Buckinghamshire after a car and delivery van both had to be helped by emergency crews yesterday – with one driver left stuck inside their vehicle because of the high water levels.

TfB spokesman, Dan Elworthy, said: “Warning signs, permanent or temporary, are there to help road users and should not be ignored or moved. We would also remind everyone to drive to the conditions of the road at all times.”

In 2014, Hawkswood Lane came 7th in the AA’s top flood rescue spots in England over the past five years.

As well as potentially damaging the vehicle, there is also a risk to the safety of passengers.

Keith Wheeler, Bucks Fire and Rescue’s road safety manager, said: "Take great care, particularly when driving while it’s still dark in areas that you know have flooded or been affected by severe weather on previous occasions, and please don't ignore diversion and road closure signs."

Bucks Fire and Rescue has also released a number of safety tips, including telling people not to drive through water that is more than a few inches deep, which could lead to vehicles become stuck, damaged, or, in fast moving water, being swept away.
