A teenage girl is in a serious but stable condition after she was hit by a bus in High Wycombe on Thursday morning, police say.

The 15-year-old sustained a serious head injury after she was hit by the red single decker bus at around 8am on Marlow Hill.

The girl - who is believed to be a student at Wycombe High School-  was taken to the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford following the crash, which police were called to at 8.06am.

Police confirmed at 10am that the road has now been cleared, with the road about to reopen.

Officers said the closure was necessary for care to patient and an investigation.

There were long delays and gridlock throughout parts of High Wycombe following the crash, which happened near Wycombe High School.

Motorists have described seeing at least a dozen police and emergency service vehicles on the scene.

The crash is understood to have happened southbound between A40 and Daws Hill Lane, with the junction at Daws Hill currently closed.

The bottom of Marlow Hill was shut off by officers, with motorists facing delays across the town and congestion going across to the east of Wycombe.

Thames Valley Police Roads Policing are advising drivers should avoid the area and tweeted earlier to say the road was reopened after collision investigators arrived are at the scene.

Investigating officer, PC Chris Fallon from the Joint Operations Unit for Roads Policing based at Amersham, said: "I would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident who has not yet contacted police, or anyone who saw the bus or the pedestrian prior to the collision taking place."
