UPDATE: Person suffers serious head injuries after being thrown from car in M40 crash

A serious crash which has left a car on its roof has closed the M40 southbound this evening. 

Traffic is currently being held on the London-bound carriageway and the section of motorway between Handy Cross (junction 4) and Beaconsfield (junction 2) is closed as traffic cannot exit at junction 3. 

A car appears to have overturned and is currently on the hard shoulder, with emergency services on the scene. 

The crash happened just after 8.30pm according to traffic links and drivers are being advised to get off the M40 at junction 4 and go through High Wycombe towards Amersham on the A404, then A355 southbound past Beaconsfield before re-joining at junction 2. 

Drivers are being advised that the main road through Beaconsfield Old Town, London End, is also closed overnight before the Beaconsfield Charter Fair opens tomorrow (Tuesday, May 10).
