Marlow school pupils received lessons in democracy from the town Mayor last week as part of a new initiative from the town council.

Year five students and at Spinfield School, on Terrington Hill, were taught about the inner workings of Marlow Town Council by Cllr Bob Johnson as he kicks of the Taste of Democracy project across the town’s primary schools.

The initiative, announced at MTC’s annual meeting on May 10, aims to raise awareness of democracy and the voting process, so children are well informed when they eventually get the chance to vote.

Cllr Johnson said: “The children were so well informed about how our country is run - I was very impressed.

“We want to listen to all our residents, young and old. Meeting our younger Marlovians at school and offering a glimpse of what we do in exchange for hearing their views is hugely beneficial - they are the voters of the future.

“I’m very excited about visiting all the schools this summer.

“If the excitement shown at Spinfield School is anything to go by, we’re in for a very busy time.”

The visit marks the start of the summer long project by the town council, which will also be holding mock elections across Marlow’s primary schools, which will encourage children to vote for their favourite cake.
