A 12-year-old girl who was part of a pioneering treatment for a rare form of cancer, will be taking part in a six-mile walk to raise money for a Prestwood cancer charity.

Sophie Armitage, from Prestwood, who was diagnosed with IMFT (Inflammatory Myofibroblastic Tumour) at the age of nine, was featured on BBC documentary Defeating cancer, the ‘evil genius’ last year.

On the programme, she underwent the revolutionary treatment that helped stabilise her chest tumour at the Royal Marsden Hospital in London.

She is now planning to take part in the annual Midnight Dream Walk on June 24 to raise money for The Thomas Ball Children’s Cancer Fund, a charity set up in 1999 by the parents of Thomas Ball, then aged nine, who had undergone almost two years of gruelling treatment for a childhood cancer called neuroblastoma.

Sadly Thomas, who was a pupil at The Misbourne School in Great Missenden, died from the disease in 2003 when the cancer returned after being in remission for three years. Charity trustees started an annual walk in his memory to fundraise for other sick children.

Sophie, who attends Dr Challoner’s High School in Cokes Lane, Little Chalfont, said she wants to raise money for the charity because she understands how a cancer diagnosis “can affect a child and their families”.

She said: “I wanted to do something to raise awareness of childhood cancer and this local charity was a perfect choice.

“I know how lucky I am that my treatment has been so successful, but still see first-hand children battling all types of cancer.”

The charity helps “make dreams come true” for children with cancer in Bucks and around the UK.

Elaine Ball, Thomas’ mum and chair of the charity, said: "We are really humbled that Sophie and her family are supporting us in our efforts to provide free holidays for very sick children who are suffering from cancer.”

“The money raised from the Midnight Dream Walk will really make a difference to the lives of many poorly children who deserve to have their dreams come true.”

Sophie has already raised more than 650 per cent of her £75 target. To donate, go to www.justgiving.com/Helen-Armitage2.
