This is the heroic moment a 53-year-old shopkeeper fought off sword and gun wielding thugs after they stormed into the quiet village newsagents and demanded cash.

The shocking CCTV footage shows the attempted robbery at Londis, in Edmunds Road, as a masked gang entered the shop and brandished a long knife and air rifle at terrified staff at around 8.35pm on November 28.

However in a dramatic show of bravery Romi Mediratta – who has owned Londis for 33 years - confronted the group and chased them out of the shop before they were able to steal anything.

This was the first of two robberies to rock the village in a month, as last week the Lane End Tandoori, in High Street, was ransacked by armed robbers who tied up the owner and threatened him with a knife.

Mr Mediratta said: “My instant reaction was my wife, she ran towards me, and I got out of the counter area and went straight out towards them and had a bit of a scuffle with them.

“I went towards the guy with a sword and took him on. The guy with the gun didn’t shoot it, he took the back of the gun and hit me over the forehead with it.

“But this time I think they knew I wasn’t going to give in. I have had the whole village supporting me saying it is very heroic and you are my hero.”

The shopkeeper can be seen chasing the robbers out of the shop and pushing a trolley in their direction.

Mr Mediratta sustained a minor cut to his head after he was hit with the rifle, but did not require hospital treatment.

The shopkeeper said he was “touched” by an influx of support from villagers since the worrying incident, and assured residents he believes Lane End is still a safe village.

He added: “I have had lots of customers come in and say you don’t look like a tough guy. I wasn’t scared. I was just thinking about my wife. I didn’t think about my own safety.

“Customers have come in, customers I hardly know that have told me that what you did is right but you would have done the same thing and I just want to thank them for their support.

“Things like this make me feel this is the community I want to be with, with or without my business. I have been really touched by the support. It makes you feel like you are a part of something.”
