A number of horses who are facing death if they are not moved today escaped from their field this morning.

Police were called after the horses escaped from Slate Meadow at around 8am, with some making it as far as Wooburn Park Tennis Lawn Club.

The horses face being destroyed if their owners do not remove them from the field today (February 3).

It comes after an abandonment notice was posted at the site on Monday.

Animal charities say the horses are being "fly-grazed" on Slate Meadow - illegally grazing on land without the landowner's permission.

Officers and members of the public had to work together to round up the escaped horses and returned them to the field "safe and sound."
