A councillor has penned a light-hearted poem to Network Rail bosses urging them to revamp a “dingy” pedestrian tunnel in Micklefield.

The verse written by Wycombe District Councillor, Andrea Baughan, highlights residents’ concerns with the underpass in Micklefield Road – including dim lighting and litter.

A team of councillors has previously teamed up to clean the tunnel – however they fear pedestrians may resort to using the road if the walkway is not regularly maintained.

Cllr Baughan, who represents Micklefield on WDC, hopes her work will lift the spirits of the Network Rail team and encourage the spring clean.

She said: “It could just do with brightening up. I know some people are concerned about the light and I thought writing a poem might be a nice idea to make Network Rail laugh because they have been lovely before and we have a laugh.

“I have always found them really responsive, and I am sure they get a lot of stick, so I just wanted to come up with something that would make them smile.

“And there is a serious side obviously, we have been trying to clean the tunnel now for a long time, it could just do with a bit of a spring clean.”

The poem, written by Wycombe District Councillor for Micklefield, Andrea Baughan, said: “We paint out graffiti from an animal rights fan, Again, again, again, again, and again, I don Hi-Viz (and look absurd), To paint out and cover a random F-Word, We sweep, and sweep and sweep and clean, We Micklefield people are proud and keen, Our children help to clear and sweep, We fill black bags up full and deep."

Network Rail welcomed the poem, and while the team didn’t respond with their own rhyme, it was confirmed they are looking into the request.

Spokesman for Network Rail, Matt Hadlington, said: “Network Rail is committed to being a good neighbour, and we work hard to deal with the numerous queries and requests that come in from communities every day.

“We certainly welcome the use of poetic license to highlight issues, and are looking into the request.  We will reply to Councillor Baughan shortly.”

Dear folk at Network Rail

Our tunnel is getting beyond the pale

Local people clean and clear it to make it nice and bright

But it is looking dingy, dirty and needs more light

We paint out graffiti from an animal rights fan

Again, again, again, again, and again

I don Hi-Viz (and look absurd)

To paint out and cover a random F-Word

We sweep, and sweep and sweep and clean

We Micklefield people are proud and keen

Our children help to clear and sweep

We fill black bags up full and deep

I have rung up and I know you are busy

I don’t want to get all in a tizzy

But please, please, please send out a crew

To clear and see what you can do

If the lights are dim and the weeds aren’t mowed

We don’t walk though and risk the road

A coat of paint, a good deep clean and maybe some new light

Would make our tunnel such a lovely sight

We will bring the workers tea and cake

To make sure that they don’t feel faint or flake

We Councillors three, and local people would dance with glee

If you would act upon our plea.
