The five top politicians who cover south Bucks constituencies hope to stand in June’s General Election following the Prime Minister’s shock announcement yesterday morning.

Despite last year insisting she would not call a snap election, PM Theresa May “reluctantly” made the U-turn announcement outside Downing Street on April 18.

Today (April 19) MPs approved Mrs May’s motion by 522 to 12 in the House of Commons.

South Bucks MPs Steve Baker, Dominic Grieve, Cheryl Gillan, John Bercow and David Lidington for Aylesbury have all confirmed they intend to stand for re-election on June 8.

The PM – who represents Maidenhead, including Cookham, as an MP, called for the election in the face of ongoing Brexit negotiations, stating “the country is coming together but Westminster is not”.

She said: "At this moment of enormous national significance there should be unity here in Westminster, but instead there is division. The country is coming together, but Westminster is not.

"In recent weeks Labour has threatened to vote against the deal we reach with the European Union.

"The Liberal Democrats have said they want to grind the business of government to a standstill.

"The Scottish National Party say they will vote against the legislation that formally repeals Britain's membership of the European Union.

"And unelected members of the House of Lords have vowed to fight us every step of the way.

"Our opponents believe that because the Government's majority is so small, our resolve will weaken and that they can force us to change course. They are wrong.

"They under-estimate our determination to get the job done and I am not prepared to let them endanger the security of millions of working people across the country."

Wycombe MP, Steve Baker, tweeted yesterday to confirm he will ask Wycombe Conservatives to “adopt” him as their candidate ahead of the election.

In the 2015 election John Bercow was elected as Speaker of the House of Commons from Buckingham with 34,617 votes.

Conservative Dominic Grieve retained his Beaconsfield seat after securing 33,621 votes and Conservative, Cheryl Gillan, held onto the Chesham and Amersham Seat with 31,138 votes.

Steve Baker won his Wycombe seat with 26,444 votes and Conservative David Lidington secured his Aylesbury seat with 28,083 votes.
