Wycombe's Conservative MP candiate has condemned controversial comments made by the party's constituency chairman calling for MPs opposing a ‘hard Brexit’ to be banned from standing in the General Election.

Garry Heath who chairs the Wycombe Conservatives Association this week insisted he will support every Conservative candidate “standing against Jeremy Corbyn’s coalition of chaos” after urging leading Tories to “purge our party and deselect the Remainers.”

In a contentious blog post on website Conservative Home Mr Heath criticised Conservative MPs who opposed a ‘hard Brexit’ arrangement which would see the complete loss of the single market.

He stated: “My question to my fellow Association Chairmen is: Do you believe that your candidate can deliver such a message, or does or she belong to the SPAD-heavy, inward-looking professional political class who believe that they have been personally blessed with exclusive knowledge and wisdom?

“As the Conservative battle bus rolls towards June, the passengers must all be looking out the front window – not peering out of the back, telling the incumbents how nice the last town was and how we should have stayed there.

“So before constituency parties are too quick to re-nominate existing candidates, let us make sure that they can deliver the post-Brexit referendum message.

“If they cannot, maybe it is time for your constituency to leave them on the pavement, and recruit people who can.”

According to the Daily Mail Wycombe candidate Steve Baker was urged to distance himself from the comments by a Tory MP “who declined to be named”.

This week Mr Baker - who has represented Wycombe in parliament since 2010 - branded Mr Heath’s comments as “alarming” saying: “After striving to preserve the harmony of the Conservative Party in Parliament, I was alarmed to read Garry Heath’s comments, which were his own.

“The choice at this election is how we move forward. Theresa May provides the strong and stable leadership necessary to take our country through Brexit and beyond. The alternative is other parties propping up a weak and nonsensical Jeremy Corbyn.

“I am proud to be standing with Theresa May in the national interest and to support every candidate standing together with us."

This week Mr Heath insisted he will support every Conservative candidate standing against the Labour party’s “coalition of chaos”.

He said: “I am supporting every Conservative candidate standing against Jeremy Corbyn’s coalition of chaos.

“We know Tony Blair’s discredited campaign to overturn the referendum result is asking Conservative voters to back Jeremy Corbyn.

“We hope they will look carefully at what a Corbyn-led government would mean for them, their families and our country."
