A self-confessed chicken whisperer hopes to wow the A-list judges on Britain’s Got Talent (BGT) next year after training his feathered friends to perform magic tricks.

Patrick Myles, who lives in Downley, has taught his pet chickens to peck out the Queen of Hearts from a pack of cards and claims the birds are more intelligent than dogs.

The 56-year-old has a long history of training animals, including horses and dogs, so he decided to embark on a new challenge - and now has every hope of winning the national talent show.

Mr Myles has also trained his chickens to choose a Guinness from a selection of beer cans and proved animals can see colour after teaching the birds to select a red cup from a multi-coloured line-up.

The Malvern Close resident has owned chickens for around five years, housing them in a field in Stokenchurch, and he says it takes him up to a week to teach them the tricks.

He said: “I used to train the horses up so they were ready for riding, I did lots of training with them, so I decided I wanted to try and train my chickens.

“I have 22 chickens. My friends used to laugh at me when I said I wanted to train chickens. In a way they are [hard to train] when I first tried they kept jumping off the table.

“I got a little shed with a table in there so they couldn’t jump off the table. I can probably train them in about a week - they are cleverer than dogs.”

Mr Myles, who works as a steward at a number of venues including the Wycombe Wanderers Football Ground, uses a “clicker” and reward system to train the animals.

He added: “I’m hoping to enter Britain’s Got Talent Next year. I think I have a chance of winning.

“I would like to try training geese next – I have about 9 of them but they are a bit stupid so they might not be able to learn something.”

A new trick, which sees a chicken pull a toy car into a parking space, is in its “early stages” according to Mr Myles and he hopes to perfect it in time for his big audition.
