The sun shone over the annual Downley Day at the weekend as more than 1,000 people flocked to the common to enjoy tropical temperatures and a range of entertainment.

Revellers enjoyed music from the Wycombe Music Centre, circus skills from Katy Kartwheel and the popular dog show on Saturday, June 17.

Families turned out with their beloved pets and battled it out across three categories – musical sit, dog with the waggiest tail and the dog which the judges would most like to take home.

The annual fete marks the launch of the Up Downley festival – which hosts numerous events over the next three weeks celebrating the best art and culture the village has to offer.

Chairman of the Downley Day committee, Bill Thompson, hailed the day  a success, adding the Wycombe Music Centre Training Band was a personal favourite.

He said: “There was a jolly good crowd, probably on par with what we had previous years. We have had two or three years of very good weather so it is pretty well what we expected.

“We had LEAP which is an all singing all dancing group, they put on a good performance. There was the High Wycombe Music Centre Training Band, and they got a good reaction.

“LEAP is very popular but the dog show always seems to get a good crowd. I quite liked the Wycombe Music Centre – sometimes these training bands aren’t so easy on the ears but they did a very good job.”

The organising committee is now looking forward to the rest of Up Downley including the 5K Fun Run on Sunday, June 25 – which is expected to have up to 150 participants – and Concert on the Common on Saturday, July 8.

Mr Thompson continued: “In three weeks’ time we are also organising the Concert on the Common which has grown to be quite a major event. It seems to attract people from quite a wide area and the common is absolutely full.”
