Dozens of firefighters battled a blaze at a takeaway shop that has damaged at least three other flats in High Wycombe.

Crews rescued a man from Peri Peri Original in Desborough Road and around 20 firefighters worked to extinguish the fire which is believed to have spread from a fryer.

The man was been left in the care of South Central Ambulance Service, however fire officers confirmed he escaped unharmed.

SCAS confirmed an ambulance crew and officer were called at 12.50pm to reports of a flat fire.

Eyewitnesses say part of Green Street has been cordoned off and there are a number of fire engines in the area.

Neighbour Mick Murphy, who was evacuated from his flat, said: “The Peri Peri chicken place was on fire. I was in my room upstairs and the fire brigade came out.

“They knocked on my door – they wanted to check me over to see if I needed any Oxygen there and then because the smoke was spreading.”

Eyewitness, Peter Dove, watched the chaos unfold. He said: “There were big flames shooting up through the chimney.

“My mate saw it first and says should we phone the police? It was on fire for a while – I noticed it at around 12.45. They were very efficient – the fire brigade came first.”

Two fire crews from High Wycombe, one from Beaconsfield, one from Amersham, the Incident Command Unit from Aylesbury and two officers were called to the scene at 12.41pm.

The fire has spread to a flat and casused smoke damage to three other flats.

Station commander at High Wycombe Fire Station, Denis Melia, confirmed the man rescued from the flat above escaped unharmed.

He told the Bucks Free Press: “There was a fire in the cooker at the Per Peri chicken place that travelled up through the extractor system.

“There is heavy smoke logging to the flats above. There is only minor damage to the shop really.

“One male adult from the flat above was rescued from the flat above as there was very heavy smoke. He was taken to the paramedics but he was fine.

“The fire was out in about 20 minutes."
