A former town mayor has died aged 88.

Frank Sweatman was mayor of Marlow from 2003 to 2004 and served as a town councillor from 1997 until 2011.

During his year as mayor, he started the annual charity golf day for the first time in 2004, raising more than £7,000 for the Thames and Chiltern Air Ambulance Service.

He was presented with a long service award by the town council in 2011 and he served on the council’s resources committee for a number of years.

He also served as a Wycombe district councillor for 31 years and was a county councillor from 1977 to 2009.

Mr Sweatman died on May 23, with his funeral taking place today (June 8).

A procession started from the town council offices in Court Garden, going up the High Street and around the obelisk, before heading on to the cemetery.

A number of councillors and dignitaries, including new mayor Chris Funnell and former mayor Jocelyn Towns, followed the hearse as it made its way up the High Street.

Marlow Town Council said in a statement: “[Frank] was a very well respected member by all those who worked with him. He will be sadly missed.”
