A young boy who fears speeding cars could injure a child close to a popular park has penned a letter pleading with the county council to help save lives and install speed cameras.

Eight-year-old Daniel Sewell, who lives in Calverley Crescent in High Wycombe, told the council that racing cars on nearby Coates Lane always interrupt him when he is sleeping or when he is out on his bike.

He wrote: “There are Fords with highly modified engines and sometimes Porches. I would describe Coates Lane as the most dangerous street in High Wycombe.

“Many children who want to go to the park have to cross this road at highly dangerous risk. A child could even get run over.

“I cross this road a lot and we have to go when a car is a quarter of a kilometre away. I think if you could add police cameras it would be very safe.”

He has also called on the council to add double yellow lines close to Hughenden Park where the road curves.

Cllr Mark Shaw, deputy leader at Bucks County Council and transport chief, thanked Daniel for his letter and reassured him Coates Lane has a “very low amount of crashes”.

He said: “When we look at introducing safety measures, such as cameras and speed bumps, we have to look at roads where there is already a high crash rate or where a lot of people are getting hurt.

“We can then look at what is happening and make changes. Because Coates Lane does not have a problem with crashes it means that unfortunately we cannot install speed camera on this road. However if he is worried about speed of cars along the road he could contact his local police neighbourhood team and of course always take care in crossing the road and remembering to follow the Green Cross Code.”
