TWO environmentalists are launching a fight to get green waste bins for residents in the South Bucks district.

Anne Ling, 59, of Lower Road, Higher Denham and Cheryl Brophy-Chan, 40, of Savay Lane, Denham Green, will launch a petition next week for the bins to be available to all households in the area.

Currently Mrs Ling, a retired mortgage department worker, receives the collection service in Higher Denham while her friend and fellow campaigner Mrs Brophy-Chan in Denham Green does not. She has to take her green waste to her friend's bin.

Mrs Ling met Mrs Brophy-Chan through the gardening club she runs.

She said: "She approached me to help with the composting campaign about six months ago. She would use my bin, but that got a bit heavy so I think she thought she must do something about getting her own one."

The pair also took part in a composting course earlier this month, which was run by Buckinghamshire County Council. After completing the two day course they became master composters' and hope to spread the word by issuing dos and don'ts' leaftlets with their petition.

"It's not all hard work and dirt, there are some very nice parts of it. We will go around and show them how easy it is," Mrs Ling added.

In March the Free Press reported on Mrs Brophy-Chan's frustration of being only a few minutes away from the trial area but not receiving a bin. This persuaded the pair to take up the course and learn about home composting.

However Kate Murray, a spokesman for South Bucks District Council, said: "It's unlikely that the green waste collection trial scheme in South Bucks will be extended into other wards in the near future.

"This is mainly due to our green waste recycling outlet at High Heavens being at full capacity taking in green waste from across the county under the waste partnership working.

"The recycling site is seeking to undergo improvements in an attempt to increase capacity. It would therefore be unwise for South Bucks District Council to consider any thoughts of expansion until this is achieved."

They will present their petition to Buckinghamshire County Council towards the end of the year and hope to launch a communal composting facility as their next project.

They will also provide information about composting by holding a stand at a Macmillan coffee morning on Sunday at Higher Denham Community Centre, Lower Road, from 2pm until 5pm. For more information contact Mrs Ling on 01895 833408.
