BUCKS New University says it has changed its plans to build a student accommodation block to try and erase residents' fears over the height of the proposal.

The university has put in a planning application to build on the old CompAir site in Hughenden Avenue and after listening to people in the area, has made adjustments.

It had planned to build accommodation for 936 students, with the highest block eight storeys high.

But after residents expressed concern about the size of the block, it has made changes and the highest building will now be six storeys, with the majority lower.

This means the new proposals will be for 504 students, with the option of building another 192 beds if it needs to. Ruth Farwell, vice chancellor at the university, said: "Unlike the factory which is a continuous roof at the same height, our proposed building will be of different heights.

"I think that is important because it provides more attractive buildings and it is something the Wycombe District Council officers were keen on."

She said the university has also been working with the council to ensure that if a green corridor' was created from the town centre to Hughenden Park, it could run through the development.

The university does not allow its students to bring cars onto halls of residence sites so Mrs Farwell believes there will not be a considerable increase in traffic if the development is given the go-ahead.

She added that the university continues to listen to residents in the area and says it is important the university maintains a good relationship with people in the town.

The university's application is set to be heard at the Development Control Committee at WDC on February 27.
