Readers have commented on a Facebook post put out by this newspaper asking 'Which roads in Wycombe and South Bucks do you think are the worst?'

One road, in particular, emerged with the most votes, but many commenters had negative things to say about the collective network.

Kingsmead Road, The Pastures, New Road, Totteridge Road and Windrush Drive were all mentioned.

North Links Road in Flackwell and a 'nasty' pothole coming down from Holtspur into Wooburn just after the bridge have also been suggested as the worst road.

The latter was even described as "a death trap accident waiting to happen" in response to Kingsmead Road's potholes.

But many did not single out a particular road in their comments.

Nick Clifton simply said Bucks roads have "more craters than the moon."

Paul Hurrell said: "The bit by the roundabout near Eden has some real gnarly holes."

Elaine Rose sarcastically said: "Easier to ask which roads DON’T have pot holes"

Ska Mark said: "I use to drive on the left-hand side of the road, now I just drive on what's left of the road!"

Collier Heidi added: "They are all hideous. Never known anything so bad, especially in high Wycombe."

Buckinghamshire Council say they recognise the roads have been "decimated across the whole country" due to harsh winter and freezing temperatures.

It was announced at the end of February that the council is investing an extra £5 million in the county’s road network, on top of £100 million it’s already committed to spending on the roads over a four-year period.

Following the announcement of the budget, £130 million in funding is being dedicated to roads and other highways infrastructure in Buckinghamshire including pavements, drains, street lighting and bridges during the council term.

Buckinghamshire Council Leader Martin Tett said at the time: “I know that residents want us to prioritise spending their money on the roads, alongside the other critical services we all rely on, which is why we’ve dedicated the extra £5 million.

"We are also in constant negotiation with both HS2 and East West Rail so that they can cover the costs of damage on the routes their vehicles use and I’m pleased that recently East West Rail have agreed to repair 12 out of 12 roads we raised with them in the north of the county.”

A spokesman at Buckinghamshire Council said: "We appreciate and share residents’ frustration with the significant increase in potholes on many of our roads.

"Buckinghamshire, like many parts of the south-east, suffered a very harsh winter, with prolonged freezing and then very wet cycles that proved very damaging to our roads, especially those that have seen large increases in HGV traffic associated with projects such as HS2 and East West Rail.

"The council understands the importance of maintaining a safe highways network which is why it is rolling forward its investment of £100 million in Buckinghamshire’s roads over four years and has recently added an additional £5 million to this budget, and a further £2.3 million from central government in recognition of this issue.

"With a much higher number of potholes reported this year, we have prioritised based on safety (as we always do) and our crews have made a huge number of mostly temporary repairs until weather conditions allow more permanent repairs to be made.

"Now that temperatures are rising and we will have periods of drier weather our crews are now on the road network making progress on the permanent repairs. Through our new Buckinghamshire Highways alliance, we will be using a range of new equipment and road surfacing techniques that are best matched to the type of road and the repairs needed to make good the potholes and other defects suffered over the winter and to protect the road surface on many other roads to minimise future winter effects.

"The scale of the repairs needed over the surfacing seasons means we will be undertaking a very large amount of work across the whole road network over the next six months and motorists are asked to be patient when they see our crews undertaking these essential repairs.

“Please continue to use FixMyStreet to check if a pothole has been reported already and use it to let us know if it hasn’t.

"Any driver who believes they have a case for compensation due to damage to their vehicle should fill out our online form and we investigate all claims made.”
