A trail through Buckinghamshire has been named as one of the most ‘Instagrammable’ cycling routes in the country.

With the Tour de France underway, gambling giant Betting.com uncovered the most scenic cycling routes in the UK and Europe.

The Ridgeway route from Avebury in Wiltshire to Ivinghoe Beacon in Bucks was ranked the sixth most mentioned on Instagram.

The research used a list of different cycling routes and compared how many hashtags were used for each route.

The scenic 87-mile-long Ridgeway through stunning countryside had 15,197 mentions.

The Ridgeway opened as a National Trail in 1973 but its history dates back to at least 5,000 years ago and possibly even longer.

It was used by drovers, traders and invaders alike as a less wooded and drier route than going through the villages below, the National Trail wrote.

The well-marked route starts from North Wessex Downs AONB with open chalk downland and Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age monuments.

It then enters the Chilterns AONB hills dotted with wooded hills and valleys and rich wildlife thanks to the famous chalk grassland.
