An MP has called for action to tackle 'idiotic' street racing putting residents' lives at risk.

Chesham and Amersham MP Sarah Green has urged the government to help the police and councils to tackle illegal street racing.

The Lib Dem MP spearheaded a motion in Parliament on January 8, with cross-party support from seven other MPs to end racing and other vehicle nuisance.

Ms Green said: “In recent months a number of people have contacted me about illegal street racing, pony and trap racing and other vehicle nuisance.

“This idiotic behaviour places the safety of pedestrians and other road users at risk. It also causes misery for local residents. My motion calls on the Government to give the police and councils the resources they need to tackle it."

The supporters of the motion said they were concerned over the safety risks and anti-social impact of street racing.

They also welcomed the recent trials of noise cameras used to detect illegal and excessively noisy vehicles, the motion said.

Speeding was a top concern for residents in Chesham, Amersham and the Chalfonts, according to neighbourhood policing surveys conducted last year.
