A plaque has been put up in Amersham to commemorate those from the town who lost their lives as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

Taking place on January 28, Mayor Elizabeth Shepherd was joined by fellow Amersham Town Councillors to unveil the sign, which is located in the Memorial Gardens.

It also recognises the invaluable contribution of key workers and the community of Amersham during this unprecedented period.

The plaque reads: In memory of those who lost their lives and those who suffered hardship as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic which started in 2020. With deep gratitude to the dedicated key works and residents who helped our community during this period.

Quote from Cllr Mark Roberts: “The COVID-19 pandemic was a traumatic period for our nation and for many of us it was amongst the most challenging of experiences in our lifetimes.

“Sadly, many people lost relatives and friends and we think particularly of them.

“I am proud of how this community came together, to keep each other safe, to support neighbours and to help the most vulnerable.

“The Memorial Gardens is a garden of remembrance, so it is fitting to place a plaque in the gardens where it will not only act as a memorial to those residents who lost their lives but also prompt people, both now and in the years to come, to reflect on the impact of the pandemic on our community and those who helped us get through those times.”

Quote from Cllr Elizabeth Shepherd, Town Mayor, added: “I was delighted to support this initiative, initiated by Councillor Roberts, to erect a plaque in the Memorial Gardens.

“The Town Council wanted to remember those that suffered during the pandemic while thanking those that helped the community during this unprecedented period.”
