A brand-new wine shop is open for business in Marlow, offering customers a wide range of exclusive tipples and a try-before-you-buy tasting counter.

The UK's largest specialist wine retailer Majestic Wine opened the doors of its new small-format store on Spittal Street this morning, Friday, March 8, with CEO John Colley describing the new branch as a "very exciting" new venture.

The shop stocks a curated range of over 600 wines alongside beers, spirits, low-alcohol alternatives and soft drinks, and over 1,200 wine varieties are also available for free online delivery via Majestic's dedicated electric van with a 'No Quibble Guarantee' giving customers the chance to exchange wine they don't like for a bottle of equivalent value, free of charge.

Employees and shoppers at the store's ribbon-cutting ceremony this morning praised its location in the town, close to Marlow train station, the High Street and several local car parks, as well as its in-store wine tastings at a bespoke counter, in operation seven days a week.

Mr Colley told the Free Press: "We've wanted to (open a branch) in Marlow for about 20 years, and, like the store we recently opened in Harpenden, this is what we call a smaller-format Majestic, with fewer parking spaces and bottles of wine rather than cases.

"The core proposition remains the same as our larger stores, however, and the smaller-format ones we've opened so far have been quite successful and allowed us to look at smaller units. That's how we've managed to squeeze Majestic into Marlow!"

He added: "We had to work very hard to get the store open ahead of Mother's Day and Easter weekend. The people of Marlow have been very welcoming and we've got a really great team who are very experienced in wine, many of whom are local colleagues as well. We're very, very excited about it."

Mayor of Marlow David Brown added that he believes Majestic Wine will "bring more options" to townspeople, even if the new shop poses some competition to existing wine retailer Grape Expectations, located around the corner on the High Street.

Bucks Free Press:

"I think it's great to have a store that sells really good wine. It may have some competition, but ultimately it's just another opportunity for (people in) the town to drink some wine!

"The shop itself is fantastic - it's been refurbished and it looks amazing. I think it's an absolutely great fit with Marlow."

Majestic Wine split from Naked Wines PLC back in 2019 and has since been on a journey of UK-wide expansion, with 16 new stores appearing over the last five years and the brand recording its best-ever Christmas sales in January 2024.
