The TV adaptation of a murder-mystery novel set in a riverside Buckinghamshire town is now out in the world – but will there be more where it came from?

The Marlow Murder Club, a two-part television series based on Robert Thorogood’s novel of the same name, painted its namesake town in golden hues and murderous intrigue when it aired on the Drama channel last week.

As well as living up to its ‘cosy crime’ moniker and skilfully fleshing out its protagonist characters, the series – filmed almost entirely in Marlow – acted as a stellar advertisement for the town and likely acted as an introduction to the thousands of viewers around the UK (and beyond) tuning in last Wednesday and Thursday night.

The Marlow Murder Club novel, which was published in 2021, is – it’s important to note – just the first of three books in Thorogood’s Marlow-based series, with the latest, The Queen of Poisons, hitting bookshelves back in January.

What are the chances, then, of a further two – and maybe more – seasons of following Judith, Susie and Becks around the town in pursuit of one or more elusive killers?

While further outings of the show have yet to be confirmed, Thorogood has been optimistic about its future whilst on the interview rounds.

Speaking to the Free Press in January, he implied new seasons could be in the works, depending on the performance of its first two instalments.

Adding: “There may be a second series of the TV show – fingers crossed, we’ll find out.”

He also told the Radio Times that he was hoping for a change in format for the series, shifting from two-hour-long episodes to a shorter-form weekly format.

He said: “The idea is to set up a returning show where we kill somebody once a week. (I wrote) the second book to be a simple story and the third book (is) a bit more like Death in Paradise. I’ve written those to be standalone episodes.”

The plot of The Marlow Murder Club follows retired architect turned crossword creator Judith Potts (Samantha Bond) as she recruits two new friends, the vicar’s wife Becks (Cara Horgan) and local dogwalker Suzie (Jo Martin) to help solve the mysterious death of her neighbour.

The second book in Thorogood’s series, Death Comes to Marlow, sees the detecting trio investigate the locked room murder of a local grandee during a party at his mansion on the Thames, and the most recent addition to the omnibus, The Queen of Poisons, knocks off the town’s mayor via a poisoned cup of coffee administered mid-council meeting.
