MP Steve Baker has told a local campaign group to ‘heed warnings’ about MP intimidation after they raised concerns about threats to their ‘democratic’ protesting rights.

A spokesperson for the Steve Baker Watch group said government discussions of a ‘democratic policing protocol’ to ‘control’ protests outside MP’s offices and homes could “stifle all kinds of peaceful protest”.

They pointed to the group’s long-term ‘vigil’ outside Mr Baker’s office in Wycombe, during which they have urged him to address “his lack of action and dismissive attitude to the existential threat of climate breakdown” as an example of peaceful action.

The sitting MP said he “wished protestors well” when he saw them outside his office but urged members to “heed recent warnings around the intimidation of MPs”.

Adding: “I know that leading members of the group have publicly endorsed Just Stop Oil and Extinction Rebellion. I hope we never see such tactics deployed in Wycombe.

“I have made no effort to conceal my opinion that we must tackle a changing climate in a proportionate and pragmatic way that people can afford. This is now government policy, thank goodness.”

Mr Baker was previously a trustee of the Global Warming Policy Foundation, which has been accused of rejecting climate science.
