Old Amersham residents have blasted a new bus service, which they claim has created a ‘safety hazard’ for pedestrians.

Carousel Buses has been met with fury after it launched route 41 through the historic High Street and conservation area last year.

Residents claim double decker buses have not passed through the town since 1987 and more than 100 people have now called on Carousel to divert its new route elsewhere.

Residents’ representative Sarah Docwra said: “These buses coming down the High Street spoil the quiet, residential and historic atmosphere of the Old Town.

“The road is totally unsuitable for this kind of traffic, and it creates a safety hazard for the many pedestrians that use the High Street.”

One of the particular issues, residents argue, is at the junction by the 17th century Market Hall where buses now take up the entire road width when turning and other vehicles cannot see them coming.

The road narrows at this point with limited visibility, prompting safety concerns.

Carousel has been approached for comment.

During a meeting with residents, the bus firm’s managing director Luke Marion said he would look into potential adjustments to the new route.

Amersham Town councillor Mark Roberts, who was also present, claimed that residents don’t benefit from buses on the new route, which do not stop on the High Street.

He said: “The buses simply use the road as a cut through to their next stop. And there is a perfectly suitable alternative – using the A413 bypass instead.”
