Wednesday is a special day as its St Georges Day. So will there be any celebrations to mark this special day? Well, there was a parade through Wycombe town centre by the Scouts (St George is their patron saint) on Sunday but that seems to be about it
I think it’s time we ramped up the celebrations for England’s patron saint perhaps even making it a national holiday. We don’t have that many national holidays compared to other countries and there is scope to add another blank holiday to the few we are permitted to have each year.
Whenever England are playing football in an international tournament the flags of St George can be found flying from cars, houses and shops but I wonder how many flags of St George will be on display tomorrow? Are there any shops selling the flag of St George at the moment? I can't think of any.
I would have thought the complex would have organised something special for the St Georges Day shoppers but sadly the recent calendar of events that marked the opening of the complex has come to an end. No doubt there will be promotional offers in some of the town centre pubs to encourage people to get drunk. I think it’s so sad that celebrations and drink seem to be inextricably linked.
At least the scouts paraded through Wycombe and the Chilterns shopping centre recently featured St George as part of their promotions. There have been some official celebrations so St George will not be forgotten this year but sadly there doesn’t seem to be a single event organised for actual day of the 23rd April. Are you doing anything special on the 23rd? Do you think we should increase our celebrations for St George?
