AN ANCIENT race down the River Thames is set to take place today.

Thousands are expected to flood the riverbanks for this year's Cookham Regatta.

The regatta which dates back to 1882, will see crews in beast themed boats and 'canoe cats' join in the racing extravaganza.

As well as entertaining crowds the regatta aims to raise money for homegrown and national charities, and last year's event brought in around £18,000.

The event is put together by Marlow Thames and Cookham Bridge Rotary Club and kicks off at 11am.

Trevor Perkins, Cookham Regatta committee member, said: "The regatta is all about having fun in your local community and to support good causes."

Other attractions on the day include a classic car show, a tea tent, archery and a bungee jump.
