There is something quite exciting about the FA Cup. The David versus Goliath romance, the break from league action, the chance to play clubs you don’t normally play.

And the first round of the FA Cup is my favourite day in the entire football calendar. This year we had that dream tie. AFC Wimbledon away, on telly, and it must be the first time ever that the whole of the country wanted us to lose.

I have not felt more nervous before a match this season – it would have been total humiliation if we had failed to win.

But from nearly the first whistle, the result was never in doubt. It was as convincing a victory as we could have expected – indeed our biggest win of the season.

You can have nothing but praise for the way Peter Taylor and his men went about their business. Matt Harrold rightly took man of the match for as complete a display as a target man since the days of Andy Rammell (another great Wycombe cup hero).

But there were big displays all around the park. John Mousinho in particular showed what he brings to the team. The Mous is rather an under rated player in my opinion, he brings a bit of extra height to the midfield, some great passing and a fierce tackle. To get three assists in one game is fantastic in anyone’s book.

The biggest plus though was undoubtedly the return to fitness of Matt Bloomfield. He only came on for the final few minutes, but Blooms is the kind of player that makes you proud to support the club. He is our longest serving player and Mr 100%.

And yet if Mousinho, Gary Holt, Tommy Doherty and Lewwis Spence remain on form, Bloomfield may struggle to even make the substitute’s bench.

The league is clearly the priority for Taylor but with no other cup competitions to worry about, another FA Cup run cannot do any harm at all.

Eastwood Town came out of the draw on Sunday, forcing many fans to reach for their atlases, but it is a great opportunity to reach Round 3. And maybe Wycombe will be on the telly again?
