CAMPAIGNERS say a zebra crossing is urgently needed to help people cross a busy Hazlemere road.

Members of the Hazlemere 50 Plus Club demonstrated on Penn Road in the village on Thursday to get their message across.

The club's chairman and secretary, Pam Ailward, said there was a “definite need” for a crossing near to the bus stop, particularly for elderly residents.

She said: “If you are an elderly person and don't walk too well, you've got to go all the way to the top of the road. People don't want to go all the way to the top and back round again.

“There's no footpath down one side of the Penn Road, the only one is down the other side so people have to cross the road.”

At the moment many residents cross the road close to the Hazlemere crossroad, where there is a traffic island near the Shell petrol station.

Mrs Ailward, who has worked in the village since 1974, added: “There's no crossing further down the road. I know how difficult it is to cross the road from many years of working at Lloyds bank.”

The campaign has the support of Hazlemere's county council representative, David Carroll.

He said a feasibility study into the cost of a new crossing would need to be carried out first.

But he added: “We've got to protect our elderly people, so the question needs to be asked. I would be fully supportive if the residents want that.

“I can see their point of view. It's a busy road and it's getting busier. I have crossed that part of the road and it is dangerous, so I'll support the people who raise the question.”
