ANGRY residents living close to Adams Park stadium have blasted a council for failing to issue tickets to people parking illegally outside their homes.

In January home owners in Carrisbrooke Avenue, Rydal Way and Warwick Avenue were sent notices telling them parking rules which have not been enforced for years would be reintroduced from January 31.

The rules forbid parking on the residential streets on matchdays for anybody, including residents.

However, Carrisbrooke Avenue resident Anna Bowen claims no parking attendants came round to enforce the restrictions last Sunday, February 15.

She said: “Everyone who lives here moved their cars out, and I had to leave mine in the car park in Asda because the surrounding streets were so full.

“The first week they bought this in the parking wardens came round and issued tickets to people parked there.

“However, on Sunday there were more than 60 cars parked in these streets but no-one came round to give them tickets. Why are they making our life difficult to provide a free car park for other people.”

Residents were first made aware of the situation in October, when the council took over parking restrictions from the police.

However, many residents in the roads complained to the council, who agreed to suspend the restrictions until they had reviewed the regulations.

Miss Bowen continued: “The regulations have been in place for years, but the police never bothered to enforce them.

“We got a hand delivered letter in January telling us enforcement would start again from January 31. What changed between October and January? It's made a lot of people very angry.

“There are much easier ways of stopping people from parking here like creating a resident's parking zone. No-one is saying they wouldn't pay to park here.”

Becky Wotherspoon, a spokesman for the council, said regulations were not enforced on Sunday because the correct signs were not displayed in time.

She said: “We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this caused residents and reassure them that we will be enforcing this regulation from the next match day onwards.”

She added the orders had been in place for more than ten years, but after a review the council found it would need to change the traffic regulations in the area before it could change the parking measures.

A full review of parking measures in place in the district will be held in April.
