A FORMER RE teacher who sexually abused three young boys was today jailed for 45 months.

Gary Munday had his behaviour condemned by a judge at Reading Crown Court when he was sentenced.

He will also remain on the sex offenders register for life after being convicted of three counts of sexual activity with a child – which related to two boys aged 13 and 15 – by jurors at Aylesbury Crown Court in December.

The 43-year-old, of Essex Road, Chesham, had already pleaded guilty to two similar offences with another boy at an earlier hearing.

He kissed the 15-year-old on the lips, the court was told, and performed a number of sex acts on the 13-year-old – described by Judge Christopher Tyrer as being “the most vulnerable” of the three abused boys.

Judge Tyrer said of the 13-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons: “He was so in need of support, he felt he was responsible for what happened.”

He added: “You repeatedly placed yourself in situations where you had the opportunity to offend against young boys and there was an element of you targeting vulnerable young people.

“The three boys came to you for friendship, support, or both.”

Judge Tyrer jailed Munday for a total of 23 months in relation to the offences towards the 13-year-old.

He was jailed for six months for the offence against the 15-year-old and another six months for the offences he pleaded guilty to.

Patricia May, defending Munday, said none of the boys had been forced into any of the sexual abuse they suffered.

She said: “There was no force, no threats, no bribes or anything of that nature involved.”

Referring to kissing the 15-year-old, Mrs May said: “There was no coercion and the act itself was one that could be regarded as low down on the scale of sexual activity.”

But she admitted the defendant's behaviour had meant he had brought his sentencing upon himself.
