A BOWLS club is looking for an injection of youth to give it a kick start.

Although it recruited four new players after an open day this month, membership of the Cookham Thameside Short Mat Bowls Club has nearly halved in recent years and is looking for some fresh legs to keep it going.

Club secretary Ruth Keys said: “I have been involved for some years. I suppose the main reason it's dropping off is we need a few younger members. We need to encourage more people.

“Most of our players have been there for over 10 years and it's the sort of thing you don't start until you have time on your hands.”

The club, which meets on Thursday evenings at Cookham Rise Primary School, hopes to get a stronger Cookham presence among its team. There are currently only two out of 18.

Ruth, from Maidenhead, also a keen golfer and badminton player, said: “ We have a competitive spirit and it's friendly club. It's a good way to spend an evening and there's a social side to it.”

Newcomers can play for free on their first visit.
